My daily curly hair routine- Top tips and hacks

I have mentioned previously in this blog that I was not always a fan of my curly hair when I was younger and would spend hours and hours and hours frazzling it with a pair of cheap straighteners to aim for the glossy, sleek, poker straight hairstyle that I was never destined to achieve. And then poof! The slightest bit of moisture in the air and I looked like I should be standing atop Pride Rock with my mane explaining the ways of the world to Simba.

Like most things about myself which I despised as a teenager, I learnt to understand that my curly hair was part of my make up and that I should embrace it rather than try everything in my power to change it. I've had others tell me that they always wanted curly rather than straight hair so I guess the 'grass is always greener' analogy really comes into play here.

It's only since my hair has grown out of my pixie crop, which I had in my late teens/ early twenties a few years ago, that I've had to learn how to manage my curls properly and although I am no expert at all and and am willing to take on any suggestions and tips that others may have, here is a run down of my daily hair routines:

Option 1. If I wash my hair

This Curly Wurly shampoo from Lush is just phenomenal but it can take a bit of getting used to- I personally think that it looks like a tub of old porridge and it needs a lot of movement to get it lathering up in order for you to feel like you're getting full coverage on your hair. It is great for cleansing all the old products out of my hair and seems to make my curls feel lighter and bouncier (chemical rich shampoos often feel like they weigh my hair down).
On alternate washes however I have recently been using Daddy-O shampoo, also from lush, as I have blonde highlighted hair and use this to avoid the brassy, yellow tones that can often crop up with neglected blonde hair. It smells insanely nice and a little goes a long way which is a bonus when you have thick hair like mine.
Condition, condition, condition....
Curly hair in general can get so dry and knotted and mine is no exception to this rule. I usually use Aussie '3 minute miracle' to inject some much needed moisture to my hair (no photo as I finished the bottle yesterday and have yet to replace) and I actually only wash my hair with shampoo once or twice a week and will 'co-wash' (posh way of saying wash with only conditioner) all the other times.

My post- shower products are basically a direct throw back from the 80s with a mousse, diffuser and hairspray combo working like a charm.

I am not too fussy which hair mousse I will use and will most often pick the one that is on offer or cheapest so right now I am using this Leo Bancroft mousse which is working well.
Although I have referred to my 'curly' hair throughout this entry, I actually have more of a Type 2A/ Type 2B style 'wave' (check out this website to find out your curly hair type) which advises that light products such as mousses are the most suitable.

I will then dry my hair using a diffuser attachment to my hair dryer, usually standing with my head upside down or at a 90 degree angle on the side to get the needed volume from the roots.
I then apply serum to reduce any frizz and use hairspray to keep it all in place and then voila- I'm ready to face the world. This process takes about 30 mins in its entirety.

*Quick Tip: Don't use too much product on your hair however as you don't want that Justin Timberlake, instant noodle, crispy curl happening that was fashionable in the early 90s.*

Option 2. If I don't wash my hair

The Frizz- Ease Dream Curl Style Spray  is like elixir in a bottle for me. I absolutely love it as it is perfect to use on day old washed hair that needs a little boost in the curl department. It is really light, almost like a mist, so it does not weigh your hair down and you will always get good coverage.
I tend to use a dry shampoo on these 'dry' days too because a. it usually smells really great and b. it gives you an added volume boost if its been flattened by a night in bed especially on the crown area.

If I've had a particularly rough nights sleep in which I wake up in the situation that my hair looks like this...

...I'll grab my straighteners (mostly redundant these days once I stopped wishing for straight hair) and will add a few curls where needed, then finish with serum and hairspray. This process takes 20- 30 minutes.
Option 3. I have no time to remotely style my hair/ its is beyond repair aka 'The Up Do'

The half up do
Strangely the underneath of my hair is always curlier and less frizzy than the top layer that can often be almost straight at the area around my face. If the underneath is looking fly but the top half is having a shocker I will usually go for this style which takes 5-10 minutes:

The messy top knot
If the above hair style is just not an option and it's one of those days where the world would just be a better place  if I contained my hair then I will go for the messy top knot and will usually add a blonde bun-maker to the mix to make the bun a bit beefier.
Pinning the front into a quiff or in a plait can also add a nice little touch. This style takes around 10 minutes:

  1. Really nice article! Personally I like curly hair. I have wavy hair so I like to make perfect curls using the best curling iron from Sedu. The quick curly hairstyles that you shared in this article are really great. I would definitely try them!

    1. Thank you! It's taken me a while to learn to embrace my curly hair and I've never used a curling iron before (usually resorting to curling with straighteners if my hair needs a little tweaking). I'll check it out :-)
