Why schedules don't work for everybody.

Nearly every other article out there on how to eat healthier, blog better, work out more, get promoted at work, save money etc tells you that in order to do so you must first create a schedule. You must plan which days that you are going to visit the gym or post your blog and you must stick to it otherwise the world will seemingly fall apart and you'll be doomed to a life of inadequacy for the rest of your days.
Scheduling is a useful tool for a lot of people as it ensures consistency and most likely improves the quantity of the activity e.g. if you're booked into an exercise class for a certain date/ time then you are more likely to turn up to it or if you've written up a weekly meal schedule then you are most likely to stick to your super healthy kale and quinoa salad rather than reaching for the nearest takeaway menu. The problem that I run into, and it is a fault of mine, is my own darn stubbornness. If I don't want to do something then I simply won't do it no matter how much I've pre-planned the activity in my week.

Take blogging for example; I am very new to blogging, just under 3 months in, and prior to clicking 'create' and posting my first entry I would spend hours upon hours trawling through the internet looking for advice on starting a blog. Nearly every single website I found told me that in order to make it a success I would have to produce a schedule of when I would write, post, tweet, instagram and I found it so overwhelming.

I found myself feeling like a failure before I'd even created the blog, before I'd even thought of a name for it in fact, because I know that I am not the best at sticking to a schedule and that seemed to be a pre-requisite to the blogging world.

I always thought that it was the best idea to only write when I had something to say not just because it was simply the scheduled day to write and I hate the idea of clicking that little 'publish' button on an entry that I only feel half- assed about.

The same with the gym. If I'm not into it I'll go through the motions of putting my gym gear on and walking over to the torture exercise machine but if I'm not mentally there then it's completely pointless.

That's not to say that I never get stuff done; I still blog on average 3 times a week, I go to the gym 3-4 times a week, I eat relatively healthy and eat what I fancy on the day, I manage to save some pennies and work hard at the office all without sticking to a pre-planned schedule. It simply means that things happen slightly more sporadically than one might wish.

I understand that others however need a schedule, they need to do things on certain days otherwise they might not get done or be ever so purposefully avoided, so having menu planners, exercise timetables, work day goals etc are essential, but personally I like to have a little more flexibility with my time.

So there you are, just a random little thought that popped into my head there folks. Hope you enjoyed it.
