When I say that Diane Keaton is my style icon, I mean specifically Diane Keaton in 'Annie Hall'. However as Diane Keaton wore her own clothes in that film, I guess I do in fact mean Diane Keaton herself. Ahhhhhh Diane Keaton inception!!
I was introduced to the film 'Annie Hall' by a friend at University at age 19 and was blown away by it straight away. Not only is it a cute film about a quirky gal and a neurotic fella who fall in love and all that goes with that old chestnut, but seeing the way in which Diane Keaton was dressed was like switching on a lightbulb in my head and for the first time I had really found someone iconic to aspire to in terms of fashion.
I had never felt an affiliation with the Audrey Hepburn or Marylyn Monroe iconography that seemed to be a prerequisite to being a female and always felt a little out of place by not having the infamous pearled portrait of Miss Hepburn, complete with cigarette holder, plastered on my wall.
Some may describe Diane/ Annie's look as frumpy or masculine but for me, she was an entity completely on her own, she looked graceful but with an androgynous flair that seemed to speak wonders to me.
A few of my own Annie Hall inspired pieces:
I liked that she looked comfortable, I liked that she was a tomboy and wore garments traditionally associated with men's fashion, I liked that she looked dapper and yet disheveled at the same time, she looked powerful and yet vulnerable and graceful yet awkward.
Her look is still en vogue today and Diane herself is still rocking the menswear styling (check out how good she looks in the middle photo!):
I could literally ramble on and on about this wonderful woman for hours but I found a few articles online which will explain further (and much more eloquently) how her style came to be so famous:
