When I woke up last Saturday and the sun was shining for the first time in ages it didn't take much persuading for me to jump in my car, pick up my sister and drive out to the country for a ramble.
It was that wonderful winter sun that still required coats and gloves because of the wind but then was so warm and inviting when the sun shone fully and the clouds passed.
Sarah (the sister) suggested that we go Hollesley, a small village in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, as not only is it incredibly beautiful but it is also infamous as the home for many of the county's deer population.
As soon as we got there I was so thankful that she had suggested it, I couldn't hear another car for the entire time that we were there and it was just so bizarre. It's so bizarre that I'm so used to the sounds of traffic and general noise from people that I took particular note of their absence when I was on this walk and it was as if Hollesley heath was putting on a private show for just the two of us.
After walking for about 20 minutes, Sarah thought that she spotted some deer in the distance so we approached slowly and sure enough saw a few curious heads looking our way. I guessed that there was 20- 30 at the most and was completely stoked with that.
When the deer began to move on however it was evident that there were far more than initially thought and I ended up counting over 100 deer that crossed our path.
It was truly magical and I would recommend that everyone switch off once in a while and find some serenity in the countryside to soothe the neurosis that we all tend to get in modern life.
